SIX
For the second time this week I woke up dazed and sleepy on my couch. I must've changed last night into my adventuring attire...and there was Marshall hovering above me, sucking the red from strawberries and tossing them back into the container on the table. I watched, until he sensed my awakening and hovered down inches above my face. I could feel his breath and still he smelled of the sweet red fruit.
"Good morning," Marshall frowned slightly, "actually it's almost sunset." Immediately he smiled and tossed and floated up, dropping a strawberry drained of color on my stomach. "You should eat, too," he nodded, smiling. "We have to plan something big for today."
"Why?" I sat up on my elbows, wrapping my fingers around the strawberry. "What's today?" I popped the strawberry in my mouth, and it was still sweet and good, just an odd pale-sick white. I looked up at him.
"Last time I checked,  it's nothing more than an ordinary day." He gazed out the window. "But of course, Gummy has decided to throw you another bash to make up for the one you missed when you, as Cake said, 'got lost'." He winked.
"Are you allowed to bring someone else?" I looked at him, to the castle's direction.
"Do you want me to take you?"
It was so quiet that I swear I heard the tree's leaves rustle impatiently. Of course, i needed him, but PG...he didn't adore Marsh like I do. He hated him. I never understood the displeasure they felt for each other...they were just opposites. The sticky-stern but soft and regal one, the joking and dark and vampire-tough one. They were at ends for their differences. I could see that. But I just didn't---couldn't---be around that. I bit my lip and stared at the expectant Marshall Lee. He wanted to go. Make sure I wanted him no matter what. But I didn't want him at Gumball's throat the whole time! Gumball...well, he was soft in my eyes. Marsh could handle himself. He was an adventure for me. I loved him. But I had a thing for protecting people. And around Marsh...Gumball needed it. Love is love. I stared at the one person who I knew I'd have forever. No matter what. This would mean a lot to him if he could come. He'd act like it was little...but...still...
"Of course," I nodded, "would you?"
"Duh, Fi," he floated up, knees bent in his usual stance. "I always gottcha." He flew down and with a quirky half-smile and scooped me in his arms. He pecked my cheek and I blushed feverishly. "I really love when you do that," he sighed. I ducked my head. He grinned, or I just had a feeling he was grinning, then he curled me around so I was sitting in his outstretched legs. I snuggled my nose into the base of his neck, where his bite marks were.
"I love these," I mumbled, kissing them. "I want some."
"You do?" He bit me gently on the neck. "I'll just turn you into a vampire. Because it went sooo smoothly last time."
I laughed at that, turning myself to where my knees were against his chest and I was leaning my head against his. Our foreheads felt like fire together. I was the day, adventuring, and he was the night, the vampire. His teeth never actually fell into my skin. He only grazed me, his tongue cool against my neck and lips. The last time it was all a joke with his ghost friends. Cake had become a 'vampire', too, in his little prank. I smiled. This was as real as I was, though. As real as his the tip of his tongue tracing up my neckline, and as real as his lips on my jaw.
"What about the party?" I choked out. I didn't want to be vamped...not when no one knew. I didn't want everyone to flip when they saw me---I eyed the floor, a good six feet below us---floating.
"Oh," he looked a little taken back. "Oh, sure. We'd better head out."
"Don't you want me to put on a dress?" I asked warily. 'Formal' was one of the worst words in the world.
"Why? I like the 'Fionna' look, personally," he shrugged, running a finger alone the bottom of my skirt. It was a joking gesture, a playful and perverted Marshal Lee gesture, but underneath was a sort of kindness and truth. He didn't care what I wore. Fionna to him was a girl in her dark blue skirt with her usual sky-blue shirt. The white socks that ran up to my thigh and the black shoes all included. I kissed the tip of his nose.
"Thanks," I mumbled.
"Yeah, let's go now." He started to float away, when I noticed something strange. A thought that had escaped my memory vault, had suddenly returned.
"Wait. I'm missing two things." I struggled a little, and he floated down and sat me on my feet. He stared at me in his 'I'm bored, so humor me' way. "My hat.." I said slowly, fingering my loose gold hair, "...and the bracelet you gave me. i was so sure I was wearing that. And I lost the hat in the forest when..." I left off, flipping the couch over and growing exasperated.
"Oh, I was playing with your bracelet," he admitted, his face holding a dark shadow as he blushed. "We can look for your hat if you want...but if we do now you'll miss your party." He said it in a matter-of-fact way. I chewed on my lip.
"After, you'll come with me?" I asked. I mean, sure I could go alone, but I really didn't want to. Not if going alone with Marshall was an option.
"Sure." He picked me back up, and pulled out my bracelet from his jean's pocket. ML slipped it on my wrist and left cradling me in his arms.
...
We were about half-way there when I saw my hat. It was sitting in the branch of a tree a little ways away. "My hat!" I jumped the foot Marshal was hovering and ran over to the tree. "Oh, glob!" I stomped my foot. This tree was slick with slime. No climbing. No Cake to stretch up and get it. Marshall flew up and stared at the hat. It was trapped in a little hole with sharp branches covering it. Some bird was plucking at it, pulling strings. "Shoo! Shoo!" I waved my arms. Marsh couldn't get my hat. "Hold me up, I can get it."
I was hovered to it, and the bird flew off. I pulled out my hat, and it fell to strings. I released the strings to the wind. "Great!" Marshall frowned and hugged me. "My hat! Look!" I pointed out in the direction the wind took it. "Let's just go home. I'm not in a party mood."
He nodded and we settled for walking home.
...
"Marsh..." I groaned.
"I just asked when you wanted to be bit," he shrugged.
Something went off. Cake was gone with her boyfriend. It'd be a while. They were at PG's party. The Prince was probably mad I blew him off once, and Cake could've told him about Marsh...she probably did. He knew. I don't know how...I can't remember if I told...he just knows. He has to. And right now...my hat was gone, Cake was usually gone these days with her magic boyfriend, Aaa hadn't been in need of an adventuress lately...I had Marshal. He's eighteen. But by then...I might want to stay human. I can't imagine why.
I need to be a vampire now. Then I can be with Marshall. Really be with him and eat red and fly to the moon if I want. Adventure, anywhere. He makes adventure. Being himself. I could with him.
I need to be a vampire.
"Now."
"NOW?" I could hear his head whip around to meet my gaze. He was sitting on the couch with me, and I was curled up. I moved so my head was on his lap. Quietly, he added in a happy voice, "Are you sure?"
"I love you," I responded.
It felt warm. No. He wasn't biting me. He was kissing my neck. He moved me in a quick jerk below him, and started kissing me. And for the first time I really kissed back. And not only did he smell good, he TASTED even better. We curled around each other, and unknowingly, my hands were on his shirt, unbuttoning it with adventuring precision. He was an adventure...
He caught my hand on the fourth button down and curled it in one of his hands. He held himself up with the other, while he steadied his breathing and whispered: "Are you sure?"
A smile lit my lips. I was more sure of this than vampirism.
"Yeah, are you?" I asked.
"Only if you want it." Pausing to make sure it was okay, he slowly slid off my skirt and tossed it to the floor. I took my shirt off and undid his jeans. The couch was so comfortable...
"I love you," I told him.
"I love you, more," he said and shut off my protests with his kisses.
...
I could be a vampire. Strawberries are yummy. ^^
