"FIONNA!"
Who???
"What the glob are you doing?!"
Cake. Ohhh...
My eyes flashed to Marshall's deep, all knowing...and down to where my skirt lay, bundled in a heap on the floor. But on his jeans, only the button was undone.
"Are you insane??? Do you know what could've happened???" Cake was in horror mode. To stricken to do a thing but scream and wave her arms frantically.
An image of a little Marshall, a little black-haired blue-tinted baby girl, flashed into my mind. No. I hadn't thought of that. But we'd stopped doing anything before Cake came in. we were just sitting on the couch now, well, it didn't look right. He was cradling me and we both were shirtless, and I was skirt-less. ML leaned down and handed me my skirt. Thanks.
Cake picked him up and pulled him outside. Uh-oh. "Cake! What?" I was on the brink of tears. But I wasn't going to let Cake see me cry! I sucked in my breath and put on my adventurer face. Get dressed. Get outside. Stop Cake from hurting my Marshall Lee!
OUTSIDE
Cake held Marshall up by a belt loop on his denim jeans. She held him up HIGH. Marshall looked unphased. He could fly after all. The cat knew that, didn't she? That if he was dropped he could just hover wordlessly above the ground. And if he were even dropped, Fionna would be very upset with Cake.
"Why did you touch my baby?" Cake said. Her voice was stern, cautious, but worn. It sounded protective and very unfriendly.
Suddenly, a wave of confusion rushed over ML. Why had he done it? He was still two years older than Fi, and still, even if he wouldn't age, she would. He couldn't just take advantage of her sadness. That had been it; Fionna was upset and wanted closeness. He hadn't seen much of Cake lately...and he was always there... And he let her! How could he do that? He made himself sick sometimes.
"I'm sorry," he said, surprising himself, "it won't happen again." he shook his head. Not like that. Fi would be his vampire if she wanted him. They hadn't done anything, sure, but it was enough to upset him. "Spend time with her." Cake let him go. "She's upset. She needs us both. Or just...you."
"She does love you, and boy, you better be nice to my Fi," Cake hissed.
"I will." Could he possibly not be? He could do wrong things, but never purposely hurt Fionna. "I love her, too," he choked.
"Yeah, 'kay." Pause. "When are you gonna give her fangs?" Interesting way to put it, Cake, Marshall Lee thought.
"Probably...probably her eighteenth birthday." Marshall stared at the clouds. They were open, free and almost protecting over the blue sky. It was as blue as Fionna's shirt. The clouds reminded him of her. A lot, he noticed, reminded him of her lately.
Cake seemed to like this answer. "Alright," she said finally, "tell her. And if you want you can stay on our couch tonight." As a warning, though, she spiked her tail and swung it around like a club, inches from his face.
"I understand," he said seriously, "thanks. I'll go tell Fionna." And with that, her tail shrunk back to just a tail, and the door was flung open.
...
I burst through the door, but it looked like everything was over. I panted, tugging my skirt down a bit.
"Is...is it 'kay?" I breathed. He was alive. Cake was drawn back, upset, but not threatening.
Cake laughed. Actually LAUGHED. "I come home early and find you two!" She shook her tail in displeasure. "But, it's okay...I know..." She smiled sadly at me.
"I'm not biting you til you're eighteen, Fi," Marshal said loudly from the other side of the door. I came around, shut it, and looked up into his endless eyes.
"Why?" I asked.
"You'll know then if you really want it. Cake has agreed. Doesn't that matter a lot? She's your best friend." Marshall smiled.
Cake cleared her throat. "I actually came early 'cause PG sent me to find you and you..." She smiled. "I think he outta know, right honey?"
"Right," I said, my voice scratching. "Can you go have him call off the party? It's not a good party convo."
"Gotcha," and Cake stretched out her legs and bounded off with a subtle: "Watch it, vampire!" over her back.
I smiled at that, and turned to ML, who was adjusting my outfit. He met my eyes with a smile and started to walk towards the Candy Kingdom.
"This is it, I guess," he murmured, "we tell him and it's set. You're my adventuress."
Should Cake have ripped his head off?
